Kylee Edwards continues to be a big part of a record-setting season for Mississippi State softball.
The Shelbyville graduate had a two-run double and a run-scoring sacrifice fly Friday to help the No. 16 Bulldogs defeat visiting No. 4 Tennessee, 9-1 in five innings.
The win was the highest-ranked win for Mississippi State in Nusz Park since 2016. It was the first win over a top-5 team in program history. The run-rule victory was the 14th of the season for the Bulldogs – also a program record. The win was the 11th win over a ranked opponent – also a program record for a season.
Edwards also was part of a highlight defensive play that earned a top-10 honor from ESPN.
Tennessee bounced back to win Saturday’s game, 6-1. On Sunday, the Volunteers built an early lead and took the series with a 7-3 victory.
Mississippi State is 29-12 this season and 9-9 in the Southeastern Conference standings.
Here is a look at other Shelby County graduates competing at the collegiate level.
Madalyn Hudnall
The Waldron graduate won the javelin competition Saturday for Mount St. Joseph at the Northern Kentucky Invitational.
Hudnall’s winning throw was 126 feet, nine inches.
Kina Schultz
The Shelbyville graduate placed 11th in the 100-meter hurdles and 12th in the 400 hurdles for Muskingum University Saturday at the All-Ohio Championships hosted by Ohio Wesleyan University.
Schultz crossed the finish line in the 100 hurdles in 17.0 seconds and the 400 hurdles in 1:13.36.
Charlie Rife
The Shelbyville graduate had a two-run double and scored two runs Saturday for Bellarmine in a 12-11 win over the University of North Alabama.
On Sunday, Rife had a double in a 22-3 loss to North Alabama.
Bellarmine is 6-29 this season and 5-10 in the Atlantic Sun Conference standings.
Cory Taylor
The Shelbyville graduate had five hits, including a pair of home runs, for Eastern Michigan on April 9 in a 20-17 loss to Oakland. It was the first 5-hit game for an Eastern Michigan baseball player since 2018.
Taylor also had a double, scored three runs and drove in four.
On Saturday, the Eagles split a doubleheader with Ohio University. In game one, Taylor had two hits, including a triple in a 15-6 victory.
Ohio won game two, 7-4. Taylor had a walk and a double in the loss.
Ohio won the series Sunday with a 9-4 victory.
Eastern Michigan is 13-21 (8-7 Mid-American Conference).

Katie Mathies
The Shelbyville graduate had two doubles and a home run Sunday to lead DePauw to a doubleheader sweep of Ohio Wesleyan. Mathies’ three hits drove in four runs in a 12-0 win.
In the opener Sunday, Mathies drove in two runs in a 13-9 win.
On Saturday, Mathies had a double and scored a run in an 8-0 win over Kenyon. She had a double and a home run in game two’s 9-0 win.
DePauw improved to 14-11-1 and is 4-0 in the North Coast Athletic Conference standings.
Asher Caldwell
The Morristown graduate carded a 6-over par round of 78 on April 9 at The Legacy Golf Club in Ottawa Lake, Michigan, to help Trine win the Lourdes Invitational.
Trine bested 12 other teams with a 299 team total.
Zaleeya Martin
The Shelbyville graduate finished 19th in the 100 (12.36) and 33rd in the 200 (25.95) for the University of Indianapolis at Ball State’s We Fly Challenge.
Madisen Hinderliter
The Shelbyville graduate placed 31st in the discus (112-10) and 21st in the women’s hammer throw (135-9) for St. Francis at Ball State’s We Fly Challenge.
Indiana DIII Championships
DePauw University hosted the Indiana DIII Championships Saturday in Greencastle, Indiana.
Tristin Maloney, a Shelbyville graduate, finished 33rd in the 1,500 in 5:12.11 for Franklin College.
Bailey Stamper, a Triton Central graduate, placed 13th in the shot put (8.72 meters) and 16th in the discus (22.5 meters) for Franklin College.
Shelbyville graduate Ava Ruschhaupt finished 20th in the 100 (15.21) and 15th in the 200 (33.56) for Franklin College.
Southwestern graduate Alison Muck earned Franklin College points in the team standings with a runner-up performance in the 100 hurdles (15.58) and a third-place finish in the high jump (1.48 meters).
